Job Description:

The Senior Optical Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of high-precision optical systems, their tolerancing and alignment procedures. He/she will also maintain existing product optical assembly procedures, make improvements and updates when require ensuring continued excellence in product delivery. He/she will be responsible for generating custom optical solutions according to customer needs using optical simulation tools and for translating such solutions into manufacturable product designs. The Senior Optical Engineer will also act as the primary interface between engineering and production teams, ensuring all design-for-manufacturing considerations are effectively implemented to facilitate a smooth transition into production

Responsibilities:

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Assist in the design of opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies. Ensure proper setup within the Epicor ERP system, with a focus on manufacturability and reasonable tolerances.

• Design and oversee the manufacture of assembly fixtures and tooling. Assemble initial prototypes while creating detailed documentation and instructions to prioritize quality and optimize production throughput.

• Understand and implement core PLX technologies, such as M.O.S.T., ensuring work instructions are current and that technicians are effectively trained in their use.

• Resolve engineering-related issues and production delays, maintaining a focus on cost-effectiveness and quality assurance.

• Oversee material procurement for new projects, ensuring timely ordering and kitting of parts and materials.

• Design and implement organized workspaces, optimizing space usage and tooling in collaboration with PLX technicians.

• Identify and implement automation solutions for high-volume production using advanced technology and inspection systems.

• Work closely with the Quality Control team to ensure that products are accurately measured and verified, applying appropriate inspection techniques.

Leadership Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the development and implementation of PLX’s strategic engineering goals and proprietary intellectual property.

• Lead engineering efforts on in-house and customer projects, ensuring effective coordination and collaboration.

Requirements:

• BS, MS and/or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics or a related field with a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in a high-precision optical production environment.  Optical and electrical train design highly preferred. An advanced degree can partially account for experience.

• Strong background in optics and opto-mechanical systems, with experience in sequential and/or non-sequential optical design tools such as Zemax, Code V, OSLO, FRED or similar.

• Strong understanding of optical components, tolerance analysis, high-precision free-space optical systems and their alignment procedures.  Hands-on experience with interferometer-based systems is required. Experience with fiber optic components and systems is a plus.

• Certified in SolidWorks (or similar CAD software) with strong understanding of PDM organization.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is expected.

• Experience with ERP systems, particularly EPICOR E11, is preferred.
